Julie Cleveland's bio

A native of the North Shore of Massachusetts, Julie Cleveland has been playing and composing at the piano for over 35 years. She earned her B.A. in music performance and composition from Bard College, where she apprenticed with internationally renowned composer and pianist Joan Tower. She then earned a Master of Music degree at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, studying classical and jazz composition. She has composed for chamber ensembles and orchestra, and been commissioned twice by the American Music Week Foundation. Her compositions have been performed in Boston; Annandale, NY; and Tulsa, OK.

In 1990 she founded the Cape Ann Piano Studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a teaching studio for pianists of all ages and levels. Ms. Cleveland has been a member of the New England Piano Teachers Association and the Massachusetts Music Teachers Association (MMTA). In March of 2003 she was an adjudicator for the non-competitive evaluations of the MMTA. She is currently an active member of the Palm Beach Country Music Teachers Association (county), Florida Music Teachers Association (state), and the Music Teachers National Association (national).

Julie Cleveland has studied injury-preventive piano technique with virtuoso pianist Barbara Lister-Sink, professor and artist-in-residence at Salem College in North Carolina, founder of WingSound workshops and author of the well-known videotape among pianists, Freeing the Caged Bird. She has also studied privately the Alexander Technique, with Corinna Trabucco.
